If you’re just starting with Photoshop, Scott’s books are a great way to learn. When upgrading from prior PSE releases, I’ve used Scott’s books as not just a way to learn new features, but as a complete refresher course on everything Photoshop can do.
That said, the one improvement I can suggest is a summary or index of new features. I especially like the way Scott not just explains each feature, but tells the reader how HE uses it or doesn’t use it, but rather uses some other feature or technique instead. He also does a great job of teach workflow: which Photoshop tools to use in what sequence; and you get to practice what he’s showing you using the exact same images he’s using in the book Scott provides link to download site.

Not his usual quality. I expected a book that explained how to do detailed photo retouching in Photoshop. Which is only good if this is your first Kelby book. Scott Kelby is the man. I have read maybe 5 books of his? Idk, lost count. He’s never let me down I’m sure for the ultra new user there’s a surprise in here, I just couldn’t find it. I’m still giving him 3 stars out of loyalty- I haven’t read the RAW section. I’m really counting on his promise to deliver hidden CC secrets.
But I’ve shot RAW exclusively for years now Oh, and dude. The cover models’ skin looks plastic. Not the look you were going for, surely? I’m an advanced amateur and have used Photoshop from very early days. I’ve learned a lot from this book.
For example, one frequent problem in landscape photography is the brightness range from the sky to the land. He also provides four bonus chapters, along with the images used in the book for download so you can follow right along. A powerful portfolio involves so much more than just a strong grasp of the technical aspects …. If you are an art major or a graphic designer you may want a more in-depth book. For me, however, this is a perfect guide to simple yet effective corrections.
One suggestion for future editions would be to give more explanations about the “technical why” some of these techniques work. My biggest criticism is that the author’s “down-home humor” gets tiring after about 25 pages.

It gives you results fast, puts you on the right track for further experiments and covers in one book what specialist magazines spread out over several years! Buy it – you won’t be disappointed.
Great book for photography. This is the best guide to photoshop 7 for digital photographers, and it replaces all my other guides. Now it is a bargain at just about half price at amazon. Highly recommanded. I’ve many Scott Kelby books which I use as my bible for photoshop.
As a more mature photographer, his books make easy reading and guide you through the minefield of technology. A great and essentual read. Report abuse. This book may provide a practical guide to using Photoshop, but for me I find Mr Kelby’s conversational style of writing extremely irritating. His puerile asides may come across well when delivered as a lecture, but not when committed to paper.
